Keannu Reeves full speed ahead - Speed (1994)

Keannu Reeves. Check.  Sandra Bullock. Check. Dennis Hopper. Check.  Action?  Definitely check.  Story?  Creatively check.  In the age of the internet, social media, there seems to a drought on original stories and sometimes its a given to see them re hashed over and over again just with different actors, different locations and situations.

with this film however, its fresh on most parts.  Who else had a story line with the lead stuck in a bus that travels more than 50 miles an hour and should it go less, the bus explodes.  How's that for being original?

Keannu Reeves was just a newbie in the movie kingdom and this film cemented his hold on the action genre and clearly he fits the bill to a T.  He shines here as a young cop who like to jump on every opportunity to catch the bad guys without thinking of his own.  He even shot his partner in the leg who was a hostage just to try and get to the bad guy.  This ended his partner's career in the field and relegated him to a desk after this.  The bad guy escaped though so it was a wasteful shooting.  Bad for his partner.

I should say Sandra Bullock was credible here as the accidental bus driver.  She doesn't have much to do here except drive and a whole lot of talking between her and Keannu.  There were some scenes in end that she gets kidnapped by the same perp and although she didn't gave a solid performance there, we still remember her driving.

I dare say that the whole film was held together by Dennis Hopper who we say is a great actor who plays great in every character he gets into.  As the sly bomber, who could tinker with toys and create new ways of blowing up stuff.  He shines here in this film.  There was a moment that he may have gone overboard in acting but during the entire film, just watch his eyes and face.  You will feel his presence when the screen hits his face.  I remember him more than Keannu in this.

Having an original story, we liked to see the twists and turns in this thing.  Credible in most parts and absurd in a few, quick one liner jokes abound offering great quips along the way.  A runaway bus isn't exciting if driven on a long highway so the story puts in speed bumps along the way.  These were nice and kept us glued on the screen, except that Keannu really looks good on screen and everything else doesn't matter.

A film from 1994 that could still hold its water in 2019, a must watch if you ask me, not because of Keannu alone, but a story worthy that never grows old in our books.
