A match made through business - The Proposal (2009)

We seem can't enough with Sandra Bullock.  This time we try to see here in a romantic comedy, the Proposal with comedic great Ryan Reynolds.  Does she have what it takes to pull the comedic punches with Reynolds?  Lets find out.

Bullock's character here is a snotty bitchy ass boss of Reynolds.  She's the devil personified as a book editor and everyone in her office floor try as much as possible steer away going her direction.  There were some unnecessary scenes so overboard but was done in good taste to try to show comedy scenes or to prove a point.  Reynolds is the slave to Bullock's character and he is the eternal whipping boy who bring her coffee everyday and tries to please her all the way.  The manner that he endures his role here was so admirable.  Imagine working for a devil boss (almost similar to Miranda Priestly in Devil Wears Prada) and enduring that hardship just to get to his dream job in the firm.  With a boss like this, and with his role as his slave, he doesn't have a chance to be promoted yet he was still naive that it will be given to him.

Then the God's struck down on Bullock and took pity with Reynolds.  It seems that she was Canadian and her stay in the United States is in jeopardy.  She should leave the country and wait for a new visa for time couldn't tell when it will be issued as she kept on delaying her appointment with immigration.  Her only quick solution now is to get married to an american, and that unlucky guy is, Reynolds.

Immigration of course was skeptical about the new relationship that they try to prove that its all fraud between the two of them.  The couple must then show their "love" and persuade the government that the marriage is true.

This journey to the altar then took the film to a comedic overdrive.  Its Sandra Bullock's time to shine here but she really does fall flat in the comedic department or her style of comedy is something very much different from Reynolds.  It's just a fish out of water scenes all over for her and at first it was fine, but if you continue doing so, it kinda stales for us.

Bullock really shines in drama if you ask us, and when the comedy film turns into serious moments, then here she shines.  When that hard snotty bitch softens for him, she shows how much she loves him, we felt that to the heart.  That scene on the altar did it for us.

The film overall was something of a passable film.  It wasn't so overly romantic and comedy was so so.  We thought Reynolds would bring it home but sadly his comedic talents here was somewhat scaled down compared to his film in the same era.  We wished he could have given more, the story line might not be original no more, but we know he can put his own twist here that will put a fresh take on this.

If you like watching a fish out of water kind of film, then this is it.  If you want to feel loved somehow, skip to the altar scene.  If you want to feel the onscreen vibe between the two, then sadly, we can't see that between them.  They may look good together, but it falls short in convincing us that both can be romantically together.

If you want to watch this film, its available now in Netflix.
