Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson in I Spy (2002)

We missed Eddie Murphy so we looked for one that would satisfy our craving.  What we found was I Spy megged way back in 2002.  Other films done later were drama which we like to watch after this.

What do you get when you bring in two comedians in one film? One hell of a movie right? Wrong.  Both guys are great comedians if you ask us, but somehow this movie didn't quite get the bang we expected.

Eddie Murphy is his usual blabbering character and he is actually good at it. As the charismatic boxing champion, Kelly Robinson, he was recruited by an american spy, Alex Scott (played by Owen Wilson).  This should have been a tandem worth it of a Rush Hour series but somehow just fell short.

Owen Wilson is mediocre in this film, or maybe his character was out of whack.  A spy should be suave or at least confident but Alex Scott is otherwise.  Always falling under the shadow and envious of another great spy.  He also is always afraid of his love interest, Famke Janssen, he is like a teenage boy in front of her.  Being a spy, I wonder how he graduated from spy academy if there was one.

The story is about Alex Scott trying to retrieve a lost "invisible" spy plane and has to travel to east europe to get it.  So he can infiltrate the "alleged" hiding place, he must sneak in as part of Kelly Robinson's crew hoping he won't be detected.  Kelly has other plans with the spy thing and this adventure begins.  Eventually they get the plane, "almost" intact and with the usual and predictable twists and turns, this movie ends in a happy note.

Anyway, the scenes are laughable (this is a comedy film by the way), the action scenes were more laughable.  The movie is as if came from a comic book, and not from the 1960 TV series it was based on.  A comedic movie of comic proportions, don't expect much on the entertainment side of this movie.

A forgettable buddy film, but entertaining if you've got the time to spare, this movie is a classic Eddie Murphy moment.  He really is a great comedian but with a story like this, I do wish he should have joined the Rush Hour series and replace the black guy there.
