How Can You Say No to - Yes Man (2008)

Jim Carrey continues to amaze us from time to time and this is one of those times.  He can't really bank on his slapstick routines forever and we appreciate him showing versatility in his acting here.

Playing a bank executive Carl, his life is as boring as a cricket on a hot summer day.  A loner of sorts, he would rather watch a rented film rather than go out with his friends.  In fact he avoids them socially as much as he can.  He always say no to most opportunities that come his way, until he meets his old friend Nick.  The latter always says yes to every question asked of him and this somehow intrigued Carl.  So much so he attended the convention invited of him by Nick and participates in the discussion with their speaker Terence (played by Terrence Stamp).

Eventually Carl go into the yes thing and here lies the comedic situations of great proportions.  Carl learns to speak Korean (which he used to get good graces from a bridal store), approves all loan applications in his bank (providing great profits for this company), learns to play the guitar (which he used to save a guy from taking his own life), and attend a weird concert (which he met his love).

There are still other situations that brought him good luck in his yes things and some bad which were not that epic.  It just goes to show to us viewers that we should, as much as possible, say yes to opportunities that goes our way.  Not 100% of those should be yes as claimed by the Yes founder Terence here.  Its  not a covenant that will hold you forever to saying yes.

Overall, the film is a watchable film, may not win any acting awards for Jim Carrey, but he offers some new comedic styles here for good effect.  I can say that it's Jim who carried the whole movie to be likeable, the rest were just humming along.

The story in itself is not paper thin, you have read along its lines and you find that there is a moral lesson to the story here.  Deceptively hidden among the comedic genius of Carrey lies a life lesson that will benefit us all.  We just can't say no to this film after watching it.
