After watching Jackie Chan for years, it can be observed that he follows a certain formula in the movies he makes.  He always mesmerizes us with his martial arts skills, combined with a little bit of comedic talent on his part, entertains us in most of his movies.  He does some seriousness in some but what stands out are his martial arts skills.

With this movie however, he didn't do all of those things and instead he pushes the acting envelope to an edge.  I have never seen Jackie in a situation wherein his acting talents are tested and went beyond its limits.  His martial arts skills although set aside, was not forgotten here so don't be sad if you truly wish to see his fighting form again here.

In this movie, he portrays a father who lost his daughter to a terrorist bomb attack.  He exudes the sorrow and pain of losing a loved one.  He was not a stranger to sorrow as we found out halfway into the film as that he already lost two already prior to this tragredy.

What a way to start the movie yet necessary.  All he wanted to know was who killed his daughter like any father would.  How he gets the information is what this movie is all about.  Jackie is trying to pressure James Bond, err Pierce Brosnan's character Liam Hennessy, a former terrorist operator turned politician, to divulge the names of those responsible in the death of Jackie Chan's daughter.

His methods were surprisingly accurate and precise.  Lo and behold, Jackie is former special forces.  He can create bombs at will, hide with purpose, and attack with precision.  If you are a fan of his martial arts, then you will not be disappointed.  Some of his flair is still present here but toned down a bit to be more realistic than be entertaining.  You will surely believe him as a former special forces kind of guy.  His tenacity to inflict pressure on Pierce Brosnan and making his life a living hell was Jackie's purpose in life until he gives up the names of the attackers which eventually near the end of the film he did.

End point this movie is about revenge and retribution.  I don't know how to side with Chan espousing revenge to its viewers but somehow the government allowed him to do so.  Not only they give him a pass, they hinted that they may use him in the future.  This we feel is their way of saying, if this movie does make money, a sequel is underway.

Overall, we liked the movie albeit slow and story thin, as it showed another side of Jackie Chan.  Of his acting prowess and he really impressed on me as a mourning father.  Pierce Brosnan's acting is still impeccable.  Sadly great acting stopped with them.  A runner up to their acting I'll give it to the Chinese lady that 'loved' Jacky Chan in the end.

After being previewed in the Avengers Infinity War, we now get an origin story of Captain Marvel coming out in 2019.  Since we are excited to see how Captain Marvel would correct the Thanos' snap, we are given the back story on Captain Marvel.  So when a trailer came out, we are all excited to see a snippet of who and what she is.

Now looking into the trailer, it didn't show much of her story.  We all know that she is human, and is a strong woman with powers.  Since this is a trailer, we need to watch the whole movie I guess. LOL.

If you have some comments or suggestions please do email us at pinoymovieclub@gmail.com.

In the era of "Bad" movies, like Bad Santa, Bad Grampa and Bad boys, Bad Moms isn't that bad.  Really? Of course not, we all love our moms so they won't be that bad.. Really... LOL

Now going into the film, it features Mila Kunis as a mom of two kids in a dysfunctional marriage who tries to be the best mom yet.  All moms would like to be the best thus this movie relates to most people in its intended genre.  In her journey to be the best mom, we see her going from one mishap to another.  These instances reach to a point that she thinks of herself as a bad mom and simply gives up.  Not literally of course, she didn't ditch her kids but instead she tries to do things which she had deprived herself of doing.  This move is what makes the movie an entertaining one.

Joined by two other moms, they lead an adventure into the unknown world of being bad moms, with the help of red wine of course.  The bad triumvirate then challenges the best mom norms in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) lead by Cristina Applegate whom we found to be quite a character in the movie.

A film about badness actually is a great movie.  Acting by the main characters are so good, you will forget some flaws here and there and focus on the more important stuff.  That moms maybe bad to some viewers, but never they were negligent of their kids here.  Everyone shined here lead by Mila Kunis herself who was exceptional.  Minus the red wine, minus the make out sessions, the lesson herein was clear.  That mom's are a hard working bunch and they need some TLC as well.

A surprise hit movie for me, we highly recommend watching this thing until the end credits.  Hit us an email at info.katooga@gmail.com if you like the end credits showing.

Finally Arthur Fleck gets an origin movie.  We have seen a lot of Batman movies, lots of reboots and origins yet we have not seen one on his best enemy ever.  Yes Arthur Fleck is the Joker.  Finally we shall get one with Joaquin Phoenix as the Arthur Fleck.

In the past, there have been a lot of actors who played the greatest arch nemesis of the Batman.  For us we liked how Heath Ledger interpreted how the Joker would be.  Its a tall order for Joaquin Phoenix to even match up to that Joker.  We know he can pull this one off as Phoenix is not a push over in terms of acting.

A three time Academy Awards Nominee, a Golden Globe winner (Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture 2006) with 4 nominations, three time BAFTA nominee, and a slew of other awards including the Grammy.  No push over and best candidate for the Joker role.  (For his list of wins and nominations - click here).

What will struck a wrong chord with him playing our favorite will be the disruption in the timeline of the DC Universe.  If you have seen the latest Joker in Suicide Squad, we saw Jay Leto performing very well in said character.  The problem?  Jay's portrayal is a young joker while this origin movie, is being played by Joaquin Phoenix (an older actor).  This is a conundrum for DC and we are in waiting how the director, Todd Philips, will connect the dots so to speak.  Is DC playing a joke or they have a card up their sleeve?

The origin movie aptly titled "Joker" is slated to hit theaters October 2019.

James Bond fans rejoice!!!! Daniel Craig will be back as the dashing 007 for the 27th James Bond film.  Filming will start March 4, 2019 and this will be Craig's fifth installment of the franchise.

For this one however, he will be directed by Cary Fukunaga.  An award winning director at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 (Sin Nombre), he made Jane Eyre in 2010 with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender.  Additionally he won also at the Emmy and BAFTA for directing True Detective starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

His latest acclaimed work was for his drama, Beasts of No Nation starred by Idris Alba in 2015.

A ground breaking trivia was hatched with this film, as Cary Fukunaga will be the first ever, first american director to meg a James Bond film.  We all know that the franchise ONLY favors the British.  From products (except maybe for the Omega, some Italian Suits and BMW at one point) to directors, they typically get only that of the British.  This film will surely be exciting to watch and see how an american director will spin a British franchise to new heights.

Another thing to watch here is the fact that will this be Daniel Craig's last James Bond film?  Many have speculated that Spectre was his last and he made hints of it near the end.  We are glad that he will be back again ready to defend and fight for her majesty the Queen.

Based on the latest twit from the official bond twitter account, the film will be shown Valentine's Day of 2020.  We love you James Bond.

As of this writing, the movie Black Panther surpassed the USD500 Million mark in worldwide distribution.  It garnered also USD292 Million in its opening weekend bypassing the Avengers:  Age of Ultron.

A lot of people flocked movie theaters to watch a big budget film composed of mostly African Americans with a story line based in Africa.  A very unique concept for a US film much more for a Marvel superhero film.  Add the fact that this movie is a "prequel" or a "setup" film prior to the showing of the Avengers:  Infinity War so its no surprise this would be a big hit.

After watching the film, (this is not my review yet) it had a feel of disney to it more than Marvel for this writer.  When I saw the lead talking to his dead father, then I waited for Simba to roar on top of the Black Panther bust LOL.  Fight scenes reminded me of Spiderman CGI, love scenes with that of Star Wars Episode II, the Wakandan space ships with that of Guardians of the Galaxy.

This was really a Disney film and with lots of easter eggs that abound in the movie, it's no wonder that planet earth leapfrogged in technology just enough time to battle Thanos in the upcoming Infinity War.

We will be reviewing the movie (with spoilers) after this film has been shown in the next few weeks.

To celebrate a momentous occasion in our family, we went out for a bonding day.  Seldom we go out and watch a movie and we decided to watch Ready Player One.

The movie has been touted as a blockbuster what with name Steven Spielberg at the helm.  He did a few films lately and this one came out him bringing nostalgia with it.  We haven't read the book but others said the movie was a level up in marketing.  The story line followed a simple plot, but Spielberg made a creative spin in the movie.

The story is a scary future of our present times.  The movie is about the near future, when people escape real life by going into a virtual world, the OASIS.  Its a world where anyone can be who they want to be, choose an avatar, create a personality for yourself and meet strangers online.  Sounds familiar?  Well, this movie is a  mirror of the times then the multiply that, we have the foreseeable future.

The movie is about a teenager finding the OASIS as an escape only to find out that villains abound trying to take over the virtual world.  A simple plot line it has, an innocent who don't want to be a hero turned one in the end, battling a rich huge corporation who wants get all the profits.  You know where this is going.

Now what makes this movie a crowd drawer?  What did Spielberg do?  Well, the book was a reminder of 90s pop culture and Spielberg leveled up.  He made a casting call success in this movie,  he got Freddy Krugger, Hello Kitty, Gundam and the Iron Giant to make an appearance for starters.  The lead Parzbal drove the delorean of Marty McFly, the love interest Artemis rode on bike by Akira, truly Spielberg knows how bridge the gap between generations.

Honestly, I watched the film for nostalgic reasons, I was more eager to see how many 90s memorabilia and easter eggs than keeping tabs with the story. Beforehand  I knew the movie was 2 hours 26 minutes long, I wondered how the movie can keep me awake with a thin story line. And yes, I was awake lest I miss some character I love would do a cameo on screen.

This writer is not schooled in film direction but just an avid movie goer.  I have watched a lot of movies and I adored every good film ever made.  This movie however came short of a gem.  The story line is common and if it wasn't for Spielberg, the movie could have tanked.  Thank him for spinning for us a movie reminding us of our childhood, the music, references to old cult classic films, the cartoon characters, making us watch the film.

Rotten tomatoes gave it a 74% rating and the audience gave it a higher 80% and I can understand why.  The movie is an entertaining one.  With all the nostalgia thrown in, it is this fact that made the movie a winner.  This might not win an Oscar but this is on its way to have a cult following.

After seeing the trailer to the movie Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, we were surprised how this one turned out to be.

After years of Jurassic Park, then the franchise was activated again with Chris Pratt leading the new cast of characters.  This movie is such a huge hit that a sequel was made hence this, Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom.

From the title suggests, the kingdom of the dinosaurs finally was gone and after watching the trailers, we can assume Isla Nublar went under the sea after the volcanic eruption.  Of course some animals were rescued or else this will be just a short film.  So here lies the story of the rescue of the dinosaurs and transfer to a place called the sanctuary.  This is the whole story but with plot twists and some play with our emotions.

After some disappointments with Avengers Infinity War and Deadpool 2, with the overwhelming negative reactions from Solo, its noteworthy that this film was able to save my sanity and my love for the cinemas.

Its nice to see the leading actors together again for this film and a slew of new characters brought in. This lead to a number of plot twists with each character bringing in their own back stories or possible future stories in the next (?) films.  Even with the old characters brought it, it surprised to see them again reprising their old selves yet we don't seem to get tired of them.  I was talking about the dinosaurs.

Oh well, just watch the movie and we shall issue a spoiler version after a week or two has passed.  We don't want to rob you of the great experience watching this film in the theatres.

Watch out for Blue!!!!

It's been three weeks since Avengers Infinity War opened in theatres and still it is being played until now.  This is how popular this movie is.  Why wouldn't it be?  Its been a decade since the thought of assembling a group of super heroes came into being and now the thought of them being killed in one movie is kinda interesting.  Here comes the superhero killer in Thanos.

For those who haven't watched the movie yet, better stop now.  Just a warning.

-----------------------------------------

Now who got killed in the movie?

Heimdall
He sent The Hulk to Earth to warn the Avengers that Thanos is coming. Then he was killed.  That was his last act of heroism.

Loki
Killed by Thanos' hands.  He died with Thor watching.

The Collector
Although we have not seen how, it is assumed he died as Thanos got the Reality Stone from him.  If we are wrong, then we might see him back again in the next Avenger film.

Gamora
Yes.  She was killed by Thanos.  She was the favorite daughter (adopted) by Thanos yet she was given up.  She was the sacrifice that Thanos made just to get the Soul stone in Vormir.

Vision
Obviously he will be killed and we expected this even before the movie even opened.  He has the Mind Stone on his forehead so we know Thanos will get his hand on it.  Half of the movie is shown the Avengers protecting him from Thanos and the war ensues unto Wakanda.

Those were the heroes that got killed by Thanos' hands or by his siblings.  Since he got his hands on all the stones, and with just a snap of his fingers, half of the population died.  And here are the list of those characters who got "disintegrated" or simply turned to dust.

Groot
Scarlet Witch
Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier)
T'Challa (Black Panther)
Sam Wilson (Falcon)
Mantis
Drax
Peter Quill (Star Lord)
Doctor Strange
Peter Parker (Spider Man)

Shown in ending credits who turned into dust.
Nick Fury
Maria Hill

Wow look at the long list characters that got killed by Thanos.  Now here are those who survived.

Thor
Bruce Banner (The Hulk)
Tony Stark (Iron Man)
James Rhodes (War Machine)
Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow)
Steve Rogers (Captain America)
Rocket Raccoon
Okoye and M'Baku (Wakanda Warriors)

We got a short list of those who survived and now we have not seen the following heroes in the film.  We assume they also "survived" the culling and we hope to see them in the next Avengers film.

Scott Lang (Ant Man)
Wasp
Clint Barton (Hawkeye)
Shuri (Black Panther's Sister)
Pepper Potts
Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel)
Valkyrie
Wong (The new Master of the New York Sanctum)
Ned (Spider Man Best friend)

This is just part one of our review and we had to get this out of our system.  We will have the story review next up.
